Cell Phones Come to Town
You may not believe this, but I live in a place where there is no cell service. People are usually astounded when I tell them this. Some people are absolutely mortified, wondering how we survive, while others often give me a slow grin, nod and tell me how great it would be to get away from their phone.
As the title of the post says, this is soon to come to an end. With the beginning of the mining boom arriving in Snow Lake, MTS has decided that we will be getting cell service, as early as April if rumours are to be believed. I’m very interested in this and the effects it will have on the town. Most people in town already own at least one cell phone for trips they take out of town. I’m wondering about people standing in the grocery store, (yes, “the” grocery store, we have one in town) who have been fine for years, suddenly feeling the need to phone home to see about items they have forgotten.
What effect will this have on the teens in town? How big will the callouses suddenly grow on their texting thumbs? What kind of policy will the school put into place about cell phones? Will we have the opportunity to use them in classes?
There are a great many questions here and I think it will be interesting to observe at it will happen all at once. There is a ready built audience as many people already have a cell phone. One day we will have no service, while the next, they will be ringing all over town.

I thought I remembered, not too long ago, that some of the mine’s were shutting down. Are things rebounding, or am I remembering incorrectly?
Yes the mines did close except for one. Now, however, we are on the edge of the biggest boom that the town has ever seen. More info in this blog post from a few months ago: http://www.evenfromhere.org/?p=1116
